Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art from her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and raised. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned degrees in English and African American Studies. While she was still a student DuVernay was interested in creating for broadcast journalism. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house of a particular member of the Jury. Her tasks left her disappointed by journalism and she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small following her graduation from the college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
